Blowing a duck or goose call is part of the fun in hunting
waterfowl. I’ve had the
privilege of hunting with some incredible callers. One of the tips that stands out to me was from Jeff Foster who I used to guide for. He said “It’s not as
important how you sound as it is when”. Being able to read birds is crucial to
calling. Spend time listening to
birds. Notice what they sound like
when they are comfortable, when they get excited, when they feed, etc.
This past year I struck up a friendship with Shane Rossen. Shane runs an organization called Callers
For Christ. I tell
you what that boy knows how to sound like a duckJ We have spent a lot of days
in the duck and goose blind together and he knows what he is talking
about. Not only have I seen proof
of that out in the field, but his trophy case from winning competitions is getting
quite full. My predication is that
he will win the World Championship of Duck Calling this year. If you want to hear detailed instruction
on how to blow a duck or a goose call go to the instruction portion of
Shane’s website.
Choosing which call to blow is also important. Personally I like Buck
Gardner calls the best.
