Decoy placement - Decoy placement is very important when hunting for snow geese.
Everybody seems to have their opinion of which type of setup works best.
Obviously there are a lot of factors ranging from wind direction, where your blind
is located, how many decoys you have and on and on. Something I have seen frequently is that
people put their decoys too close together and simply put them in a blob or
circle. This may work at the
beginning of the season, but once the birds wise up you must improve your
spreads. I have put together some
diagrams for decoy spread ideas for you to see.

SAMPLE DECOY SPREADS

The Guitar
With this spread the key is to
make the “handle” of the guitar long… up to 100 yards. If you can get well hidden you could
also move the blind location so that the birds are coming at you instead of
from the side.

Inside Hole
This is a great spread,
especially if you have a large number of decoys. This creates a great landing
zone. Make sure you are well
hidden!

J Hook
This is a spread many people
use, it’s not my favorite unless I am using a smaller number of decoys,
up to about 400.

Tear Drop
This would be a good spread in
heavy wind. Make sure you are
well hidden and let the birds get all the way on top of you before calling
the shot.
